CARTERVILLE - Sophomore guard Shenay Crater buried a 15-foot jumper from just inside the top of the key Monday evening with seven seconds left in the game to rally the John A. Logan College women's basketball team to an improbable 74-72 nonconference home victory over Vincennes University.

Ashley Buis missed a shot from 18 feet out that would have tied the game as time ran out. The win was improbable because the Volunteers, now 8-4 overall, trailed by 13 points at the half at 41-28. But a stunning 24-2 run at the start of the second half fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Taylor Manley got the home team back in the ballgame.

"What a comeback," said Logan head coach Marty Hawkins. "We missed a lot of bunnies in the first half, but we didn't stop playing. For us to come back like we did tonight against a team as good as Vincennes, I think that shows how good of a game we played."

Hawkins said he had no problem with Crater taking the money shot with the outcome of the game hanging in the balance.

"She saw an opening in the defense and took the shot," he said.

Crater, a Chicago native, said she was nervous but not so much so that she would pass up the shot.

"I wasn't thinking about shooting the ball when it came to me. But I was wide open and I know the clock was ticking down. There was only one other time that I can remember hitting a game-winning shot and that was my senior year in high school. It felt good to hit that one tonight. It really did."

Crater said she hopes the come-from-behind win is the perfect spark for the conference opener Wednesday at Lincoln Trail.

"I think this win says a lot about our character. It showed that we're not going to back down to anybody."

The late-game heroics by Crater overshadowed a strong performance from DaLita Scott, who led the Vols in scoring with 20 points. Manley finished with 19, including 15 in the second half.
