CARTERVILLE - The inability to score from close range combined with several key turnovers late in the ball game led to a 65-57 nonconference loss to visiting Vincennes University on Monday for the John A. Logan College Volunteers.
The Vols could only convert 8-of-34 field goal opportunities over the final 20 minutes of play. The results left Logan head coach Mark Imhoff perplexed.
"We've got to get better," he said. "I don't know how many we missed from point-blank range. And then we also turned the ball over late. Our mistakes killed us."
Although struggling to find any first-half rhythm, the Vols still managed to take a four-point lead into the intermission at 35-31. Kenny Harris led the charge with eight of his team-high 11 points. But the Trailblazers would rally in the second half and take control of the ballgame late. A pair of 3-pointers from Donald Stewart proved to be huge and the visitors outfought Logan on the boards.
"As bad as we played, we were still in a position to win with a couple of minutes to go, but couldn't get any closer," Imhoff said. "We're going to have to start playing with more intelligence when we have the ball late in the game. I'd say we're struggling with our basketball IQ right now. Of the four games we've lost, we've been up double figures every time. The junior college game is a tough game. We're going to have to be ready to play again Wednesday night."
The Vols fall to 8-4 overall and begin Great Rivers Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson.
