What is RSS?

RSS is an easy way for you to keep updated automatically on Web sites you like. Instead of checking your favorite Web sites to see if they've written a new article or feature, you can use RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) to get them to tell you every time they have something new.

TheSouthern.com now offers RSS feeds (or channels) for most of its sections.

How can I make use of RSS?

In the past, aggregate news readers were the only way to see RSS feeds. Web browsers have been updated allow you to show and display RSS feeds. Simply add the RSS link to your favorites (by clicking the star icon in IE, or simply selecting "subscribe feed" in Firefox). This will allow you to see RSS feeds from selected Web sites on your computer.
We also encourage you to use all-in-one personalized pages, such as the one offered from Yahoo! You can enter many RSS feed addresses on your My Yahoo! page and see all the important news you want in the same place! For more info on setting yours up, click here!

If you experience any errors with the feeds, e-mail us and let us know.

How do I see the feed on a page?

Browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox incorporate RSS feed saving and reading, and this is becoming common practive, replacing older stand-alone news reader programs. There are a range of web content sites that offer personal pages where you go put all your favorite feeds from different sources in one place, avaoiding the need to surf dozens of websites.

The Southern Illinoisian recommends Yahoo! for these types of services. My Yahoo! is a great service that allows you to make your own news boxes on one page, with the content provided from the original site you normally get this information from. Now you can see our breaking news headlines, sports, business and more along side with other news, weather and information feeds - in one convenitent package!
