MARION - What began as a nice going away present within a single family circle has now widened to include many people.

Better yet, the present has turned into a celebration for Southern Illinoisans who have military ties, and participation is open to everyone.

Any newly enlisted men and women from this area are encouraged to attend a Southern Illinois Newly Enlisted Military Send-Off Celebration beginning at noon July 11 at Cornerstone Church, 9835 Old Bainbridge Trail of Marion. The church is located near Heartland Regional Medical Center.

"This will be a day to show our gratitude and pride, as our newly enlisted military begin a high calling and sacrificial journey in serving and defending our country," said Toni Shelton of Vienna who along with her husband Jack, have organized the event from scratch.

The celebration will include an Honor and Recognition Ceremony with the U.S. Color Guard; a flight appearance and landing of an Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter; a picnic with activities and games; and live music performed by the Red Letter band.

Gift certificates from area retail businesses such as restaurants, movie theaters, and other retail stores will be given to the newly enlisted.

"These items and services will be used by the newly enlisted before their leave date in hopes of showing them our support as a community," Shelton said.

Veterans and those currently enlisted in the armed forces are encouraged to wear their uniforms and attend the celebration. A change-of-clothes area will be provided, Shelton said.

The event sprang from a going away party idea the Sheltons had for their son Alex who entered the Air Force and is ready to leave and begin service at the end of the month.

"He (Alex) wanted to include several of his friends going into the service. The next thing we knew, our hearts were set to do this for all the newly enlisted military in Southern Illinois," Shelton said.

People, businesses and organizations who want to be part of the celebration and donate should contact Toni Shelton at 618-771-2856; Jack Shelton at 618-771-2857; or e-mail them at: jackandtonishelton@yahoo.com.
