HERRIN - Joyce Davie chose the word "outdoorsman" to describe her husband Monday as she and her family continue to remember the Herrin man who was killed Sunday doing something she said he loved.

Dennis Davie, 68, of Herrin was killed Sunday morning when a tree he was cutting shifted direction and fell on him.

Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke pronounced Davie dead at about 11:41 a.m. The accident occurred about a half of an hour earlier on property in Carterville, located at 15247 Laminack Road. Davie owned the property and used it to hunt and hang out with his friends.

"That's where the guys go to gather and sit around and talk," Joyce said. "He loved the outdoors and hunting and fishing and cutting wood."

"He was very outgoing," she said. "He loved people and his buddies."

She said her husband and friends were clearing trees and limbs on the 40 acres when the accident occurred.

Dennis and Joyce have one daughter and son-in-law, Rick and Gina Raney.

"My dad was just an all-around great guy," Gina said. "He would have given you the shirt off of his back. When I think of him, I just think of a big heart and a guy who probably just loaned somebody something."

Gina said she finds some peace in her father's accident because he was doing something he loved.

"He would have done anything for anybody," she said. "He was a great dad."

The incident is under investigation by Burke's office and the Williamson County Sheriff's Department.

Williamson County Fire Protection District, along with the Carterville Fire and Ambulance Department, assisted in the incident.
