CRAB ORCHARD - A rural Williamson County family wants to do its part to keep its Southern Illinois neighbors warm this winter.
Tammy and Sam Waters and their three children are collecting new or gently-used winter hats, socks, slippers, gloves, mittens and scarves.
Tammy Waters said she and her husband wanted to practice what they preach and show their children an example of compassion in action.
"One easy way to stay warm is with mittens or gloves, a knit winter hat, a scarf, warm socks or slippers," she said. "Unfortunately, many families and individuals struggling to make ends meet can't afford even those simple, inexpensive items."
Waters said the family had kicked around the idea of helping the less fortunate for some time before moving forward with its plan.
"This is just one small way we are able to help meet some needs for people," she said.
Kage Waters, 11, said he likes the idea of collecting winter wear for others.
"I think it's really neat because it feels like we're making a difference in the world," he said.
