MURPHYSBORO - He's at the U.S. Naval Station in Ingleside, Texas, ready for a fourth deployment to the Middle East.

His parents, Pat and Ruth Cook hope to see him in person before he goes. And when they do, Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick Ryan Cook will receive an American flag donated by U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Belleville.

The 1997 Murphysboro High School graduate was selected this year's flag recipient. The selection has become a tradition during the Annual Veterans Day Luncheon hosted by Saint Andrew School.

"It's very touching our son has been chosen to be honored," said Pat Cook, an Army veteran who served from 1971-76 and 1979-1996.

Cook joined 35 other veterans who introduced themselves and briefly described their duty during Thursday's luncheon held in the school gymnasium.

"It's an emotional day for all of us. Our students learn what it means to be a veteran. We want our behavior to reflect respect for them," said school Principal Nancy Borgsmiller.

Maj. Thomas Vece, an Army reservist nearing the end of his tour, told students in a short speech that "freedom isn't free. It comes at a cost."

He talked about the sacrifices of veterans that ultimately include putting lives on the line.

"Less than 1 percent of our population is serving in the armed forces. I will protect your freedom. I will protect your life. The ladies and gentleman seated here today have been doing it for generations. That's what makes them so special," Vece told the students.

Vece's son, Aidian, who is a sixth-grader at St. Andrew later read a poem honoring veterans.

The luncheon program included patriotic songs sung by students, art work and a small table set to honor U.S. soldiers who are prisoners of war or missing in action.
