A rural Dongola woman was struck and killed by a vehicle early Sunday morning as she was walking along U.S. 51 South near Dongola.

Carole Brown, 65, of Dongola was standing on the pavement when she was struck at 12:50 a.m. by a southbound vehicle driven by a 20-year-old Chicago Heights man. The incident is considered an accident, and no citations were issued, Union County Sheriff David Livesay said in a news release.

She was reported to have suffered from a mental illness and was disoriented, the release said.

Union County Coroner Darryl Rendleman said Brown was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner. He said the victim lived in a rural area along U.S. 51, not far from the accident scene. Toxicology tests will be performed.

Brown had taught elementary school in the Egyptian District for 17 years. A native of Cairo, she was a graduate of Ullin High School and had both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dongola and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in First Lutheran Church in Dongola; burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery at McClure.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
