Illinois is one of six states chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation on Tuesday that will receive funds and technical assistance from The National Trust for Historic Preservation to promote the location of schools within neighborhoods rather that on the outskirts of communities.
State officials will receive $6,000 to develop model state-level policies which encourage sustainable schools throughout Illinois.
"Why Johnny Can't Walk to School" emphasizes that schools can be sited in ways that achieve educational objectives, anchor the local neighborhood, support better public health, create a cleaner environment, spur economic development and offer additional amenities to the community.
The grants are funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Jessie Ball DuPont Fund.
