WEST SALEM - One of the strongest aftershocks from last week's earthquake in far southern Illinois was recorded early Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Geologists say the temblor just before 12:40 a.m. Monday registered a 4.5 magnitude at its epicenter about 5 miles northwest of Mount Carmel.

Edwards County Sheriff's officials said no injuries or damage were immediately reported from Monday's aftershock. It marked the 18th aftershock since Friday's quake, said Carrieann Bedwell, a USGS geophysicist in Golden, Colo.

The Edwards County location is in the same area as Friday's early morning 5.2-magnitude earthquake. That was followed by a 4.6-magnitude aftershock about 5½ hours later.
