CARBONDALE - These guitar players don't care that much if the music on their concert program was written for piano - they'll translate.
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Guitar Ensemble presents a concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall on campus.
The concert includes selections from pianists Enrique Granados (1867-1916), Bela Barok (1881-1945), George Gerschwin (1898-1937) and Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849), as well as composers Charles Gounod (1819-1893) and Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), and classical guitar composer Laurindo Almeida (1917-1995).
Joseph Breznkiar, the ensemble director, said at least several of the pieces will almost certainly be familiar to the audience. The Grieg selection, for example, is the Peer Gynt Suites, originally orchestral music written for the play of the same name by Henrik Ibsen. There are four movements, including "Morning Mood" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King." The latter is a popular piece in its own right. "Morning Mood" is often used in cartoon sound tracks.
Another well-known piece on the program is Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette," otherwise known as the Alfred Hitchcock theme.
Remember, though, these pieces will be played by guitar quartets, which will give the familiar melodies a whole new sound.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students.
