MURPHYSBORO - The owner of a mixed-breed pit bull euthanized the animal Monday after it reportedly attacked an on-duty postal worker in Murphysboro, authorities say.
Laurie Garrison of Ava was hand-delivering mail to a resident on McCord Street around noon, when the dog either broke its collar or got out of it and bit her on the hand and wrist, Mike Gahagan, animal control officer for the Murphysboro Police Department, said.
The dog was put down after the attack, Gahagan said.
Though its rabies information show the animal was up-to-date on its shots, the dog will still be tested, he added.
It is unknown whether the mail carrier required medical treatment following the attack.
