WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama's appointed successor was turned away when he appeared at the U.S. Capitol to take his seat.

Former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris announced the decision to deny him the seat as he stood before a large throng of reporters and cameras in the rain outside the Capitol building.

Speaking just an hour before the convening of the 111th Congress on Tuesday, Burris said he was looking at a host of options for getting the seat.

" Burris's right to be seated is a no-brainer. He has been legally appointed to fill a vacancy by the man who, like it or not, is still our state's governor. The mere fact that Blagojevich is a crook doesn't divest him of his powers as Governor - we knew that he was a crook when we reelected him! And the mere fact that a complaint has been filed against him in court also doesn't take away his powers - he enjoys a legal presumption of innocence just as all of us do. No, there are two ways provided by law to take away his power as Governor - impeachment and conviction by the Senate, or a felony criminal conviction in criminal court, and neither one has happened yet. Let's hope that one or the other does happen soon, but, till then, better get used to the fact that he's still the Governor. And by the way, can we please get over this "Crook County" business? Doesn't anybody remember the thousands of Blagojevich signs that blanketed Southern Illinois during the last two gubernatorial elections? The whole region looked like Blago's mother's front yard! There's plenty enough blame to go around. "

" A question for Anonblog2009...should that not be "Crook" County? "

" Blago was trying to slip a fast one by all of Illinois. I used to live in Marion County where Burris is from. Marion County is known as "Little Cook County" for the corruption there. IF Blago couldn't appoint some crook from Cook County, why not try someone from "Little Cook County". "

" I say congress seat him, then let the people of Illinois choose if they want to keep him in the next election. Then the people get the last laugh, and the state gets out of the spotlight for a while. We, the people of Illinois, are the laughingstock of America. Let Burris follow his pipe dream, then we vote how we feel about him and his crony Blago. "

" Democrats to Roland Burris: "Go to the back of the bus, or the back of the Senate--and shut up!! What do you thing we are...a democratic party?" "

" Gee....never saw THAT comin'! ;)

Seriously, though....I don't think that the problem is so much with Roland Burris as it is with the attitude behind the appointment. Soon-to-be ex-governor Blagojevich did not appoint Burris based on his qualifications; he made this appointment as a defiant dictator just to shove it up everyone's behinds. He's not serious about this appointment; he's just trying to throw his weight around. That is NOT the right attitude to have when it comes to filling a US Senate seat. This is a very serious matter, and someone who is not serious about it should not be involved in it at all. This is NOT all about Rod Blagojevich, even though he obviously thinks it is.

I do have to question, though, why Burris even accepted Blago's offer in the first place. He has very likely destroyed his own career by associating with Blago during this scandal. Not a wise move on his part! Of course, he has stated for the record that he had no part in the scandal, and as it stands, I have no reason to doubt that, but the association is there, and it has hurt his image very deeply. Of that, we can be most certain.

Part of me feels sorry for Roland Burris, but the other part of me marvels at his lack of good judgment. I thought for sure that he understood that when you play in the sewer, you're going to get covered in crap. "

" Senate and White add insult to injury to Illinois. Burris can't be the worse candidate Illinois has ever had. Remember the Village Idiot that was Senator? She also "ran" for president! He is far more qualified for the seat than Obama! Just because Blago is a scumbag why is the law not being followed? We know...Reid and Chicago machine along with Obama are a law unto themselves. Chuckie Schumar wants Frankenstein sworn in but not Burris? Charlie Rangle breaks all the rules on his personal taxes and still gets to keep his seat on House banking committee. Nancy Pee-looseeeee was right when she said she would create the most corrupt congress in a century! "
