"Conceal-carry" on the ballot in several Illinois counties this November
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Monday, October 13, 2008 12:27 PM CDT
Voters in 14 Illinois counties will have a chance next month to let Springfield know what they think about citizens' right to carry concealed firearms, including those in Saline, Franklin and Union counties in Southern Illinois.

The referendum will ask whether the state should enact so-called ``concealed-carry'' legislation.

The referendum is advisory only. Voters will not be deciding whether individual counties should adopt those rights, but whether state legislators should bring the issue to a vote.

Advocates of the legislation say such a law is long overdue in Illinois, which is one of only two states that haven't passed some form of the statute.

" Why is it that my wife can shop in Cape Girardeau, Paducah or Evansville and have the means to protect her life and that of my children but in Illinois, one of only two states without concealed carry, she would be considered a felon for having the same means to do this?

Pass concealed carry in Illinois now and allow women and families to protect themselves from violent predators!! "

" This is simple. (1) Criminals are already carrying conceaked weapons. You pass them every day on the street. (2) Good citizens deserve the right to choose their means of self and family defense. If that's a gun, that's OK. (3) Every state that has enacted Concealed Carry has seen an immediate decrease in the violent crime rate. Don't believe me, check it out. The Federal Goverment and several universities have studied the effects of Concealed Carry laws and reached the same conclusion. Concealed Carry reduces crime. Don't be afraid of Concealed Carry. It's a good thing when good people carry guns. "

" sell? Heh, I'd be willing to pay for them to take Chicago as their own. heh heh

I agree Geez.... this is just a referendum and means nothing. However, if widespread support is found, then, hey, who knows? "

" Is there some way we can sell Chicago to Wisconsin? Or better yet, Canada? "

Geez wrote on Oct 13, 2008 7:05 PM:

" Please note that this is a referendum only. It was something that came from a conceal carry discussion in Winnebago County. They then sent a letter to all the remaining counties. This is only to get a grasp on how citizens feel and will actually mean nothing. Many feel this was a mistake and should have not even taken place. Conceal carry needs to be statewide, not county by county. "

" I wonder what the criminals would vote for?

Seems to me, the only people concealing guns right now are the criminals.

As far as the gun-free-zone signs, maybe if they also included braille versions of these signs? I mean, nobody's talking about the vision impaired gangsters imposing their will on the people. Obviously, with braille versions of these signs, Chicago's crime rate would drastically drop. I think it was a huge oversight (pardon the pun) on the part of law makers to exclude this group of radicals.

All joking aside, there was a reason why our fore-fathers put the "right to bear arms" in the constitution. "

" Illinois doesn’t need a conceal-and-carry law! I mean, look at Chicago’s oh-so-low murder rate. Just because the murder rate is almost the same as Baghdad’s, doesn’t mean the Chicago’s “Gun Free Zone” signs aren’t working. Does it?? "

" Boy, the first two comments have this right. As long as Chicago dictates what goes on in this state, we will never see concealed carry in any form in Illinois. One mentions retired officers under federal law. They are correct in that there are already laws in place for this, but these officers must qualify once yearly AND pay the State of Illinois $100 just to do this. I think the majority of law enforcement (in Southern Illinois) would agree with some sort of concealed carry as long as it is regulated within reason.....but when has Illinois operated within reason? "

" Illinois and Wisconsin are the only two states which do not have at least some form of Concealed Carry law.

Of course the Chicago Machine will strike this down quickly, especially seeing as how they're still holding to their Unconstitutional ban on handguns. "

" Don't hold your breath on this one! I know of at least two local departments that refused to follow the federal law allowing retired police officers to carry. All the departments had to do was issue an ID card and the retired officer was requird to have a badge. One police chief and one sheriff refused to issue the ID cards concerned that they had some type of liability even though the retired officer had no connection with the department.

IF this law is passed, get ready for a long list of requirements and fees so the average person can have the same type of protection the bad guys have. "
