CARBONDALE -Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Brian Ley said Friday Brian Dickmann and Darren Lindsey were the two officers shot Thursday morning while serving a drug search warrant.
Dickmann, who has been with the state police for nine years, is still in stable condition.
Lindsey, a 20-year-veteran, has been released.
Ley said he could not say who received what wounds, though one of the troopers was shot in the head and the other in the arm. Both are members of the Southern Illinois Tactical Response Team.
Officers from that unit and Southern Illinois Enforcement Group approached the residence of William A. Patrich at 265 Falcon Road in Williamson County near Crab Orchard Lake about 7:15 a.m. Thursday.
Patrich opened fire on the officers, hitting Dickmann and Lindsey, state police Lt. Compton said Thursday. Police returned fire, fatally wounding Patrich.
State's Attorney Charles Garnati confirmed the warrant had come through his office. He said warrants are generally brought to prosecutors for review. If the state's attorney or assistant state's attorney agrees there is probable cause, the warrant application is presented to a judge for approval.
Ley said because the investigation continues, he could not say whether drugs were found at Patrich's home.
