BY THE SOUTHERN
Thursday, September 4, 2008 1:52 PM CDT
CARBONDALE - Fall enrollment at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has dropped more than 300 students since last fall, and university officials are citing the economy as a leading factor.

Offical numbers from the 10th day of classes at SIUC show this fall's enrollment at 20,673 compared to 20,983 last year.

Freshman and sophomore numbers both increased this year by 119 and 38, respectively.

"When it comes to enrollment, we are facing economic and competitive challenges that we haven't seen in a generation," Interim Chancellor Samuel Goldman said in a press release.

" Yes, it is the economy and when the economy is difficult you don't raise prices. This institution has done nothing to keep their fees and housing prices in check. The great mouse trap dream (build a better one and they will come) has not succeeded. The university has tried purple foot prints on the street, dawg tags, high priced coaches, new stadium promises branding, and everything to sell a "product" when all the students and their parents want is a good solid education that is affordable. Please administrators don't respond with the quip of student loans being available. Would you mortgage your future to go to this school? That is what you are asking these students and their families to do. "
