SIUC chancellor search will be deliberate
BY ADAM TESTA, THE SOUTHERN
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 11:32 PM CDT
CARBONDALE - Southern Illinois University Carbondale may go it alone in the search for its next chancellor.

While nothing has been made official yet, SIU President Glenn Poshard said Tuesday the university may avoid hiring an outside firm to aid in the search.

The university spent $150,000 on a search last year that resulted in the hiring of Fernando Treviño, who was removed from his position in March.

"We want to be very deliberate on this search," Poshard said. "We want to gather a whole pool of candidates before we form a committee and get started."

The pooling of prospective candidates will begin immediately and a full-time chancellor, the university's fifth since 2006, will hopefully be in place by the fall semester of 2010, Poshard said.

In the meantime, acting Chancellor Samuel Goldman will continue to serve in the position.

"I think he understands the issues here, both from his professorial tenure on campus and his time on the Board of Trustees," Poshard said of Goldman, who assumed the Carbondale campus' top position in April.

Goldman was not available for comment Tuesday.

" Oh boy, here we go again. Except for the associated expense, the entertainment value of these scheduled “cluster farces” is terrific. I can hardly wait and can see it now...story after yawning story, quote after yawn inspiring quote, and just think of all the Poshard photo ops. In his office, behind his desk, in front of his desk, frontal shots, smiling, serious, pensive and thoughtful. On second thought--having seen this movie before--the re-play won't be much fun after all. "

" I have a great idea. Just let Poshard be the Prez & Chancellor. He is going to hire some puppet on a string anyway to be his "Yes" Man or Woman, so let's just save a couple hundred thousand dollars on salary and eventual lawsuit for whoever will be hired and fired by the GREAT ONE!! "

" If the administration has learned anything they should promote from within. Hiring these clowns from outside who use us as a line on their resume is ridiculous. Any astute businessman will tell you that the best way to improve morale is to stay within the family if at all possible. "
