Hixson returning to West Frankfort high school
By Tara Fasol, The Southern
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 10:45 PM CDT
WEST FRANKFORT - Frankfort Community High School Principal John Hixson will reassume his duties as principal Aug. 1 following a board vote this week to reappoint him after an extended leave.

Hixson was originally granted a leave of absence for 400 days to coincide with a planned deployment overseas with the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was to remain on the school's payroll but have his duties assumed by Assistant Principal Ellie Rush.

The school board later granted Hixson a second leave of absence, which was effective immediately in May and was set to last 12 weeks, leading up to the leave granted for military purposes.

Hixson took the early leave and did not attend many end-of-the-year events, including graduation.

The second leave expired on Aug. 1 and because Hixson didn't leave for Iraq, his leave of absence for that tour of duty was cancelled.

The school board went into executive session Monday night and discussed the matter at length, according to Superintendent Greg Goins, and the decision was made to reappointment the principal to his previous duties.

"There was a lot of discussion about it but it was all in closed session for personnel," Goins said Wednesday. "There's not a lot I can say."

Just after the school board granted Hixson his second leave of absence, he talked to The Southern about "stressful personal issues" that led to the board's decision to grant his early leave.

Hixson said those issues included his deployment to Iraq and a then-recent divorce from another high school employee.

"People need to understand that being a school administrator can be a very stressful job," Goins said Wednesday. "If you add personal problems to that, you magnify those stress levels."

Goins said he is confident that Hixson is now ready to reassume his duties without personal conflicts.

"I will just come back from my leave of absence," Hixson said Wednesday afternoon. "My (military) orders were cancelled.

"There are a lot of projects going on right now at the high school. We built a new and pretty large computer lab. We have hired a new part-time business teacher and an English teacher. We are expanding our curriculum and we are working on the roof right now."

" I agree with taxpayer. Watch where he goes and what he does and also pay VERY close attention to the internet. He is not changing. "

" Prescription drugs are legal....
Also, kids are just trying to get him in trouble at school with rumors about the peeping tom and cheating. Most parents are not concerned and are not voicing opinions because it isn't a big issue. If it were an issue he would not be the principle this year. Come on everyone, stop spreading rumors unless you can back it up. "

" Ok, for those of you wo don't think tis guy is so bad, or want to know what really is the problem. Follow him. Don't do anything illegal, but find out where he is living now, and get some other concerned parrents, and take cameras, and cover him from a distance for several days. His addictions won't be able to bear up under th pressure of observation. You will have your evidence of why he should noy be a role model for our children. If you care, just do it! "

" Wow, So would anybody care to Explain what the heck all of these personal problems are? I mean here in town we seem to hear a lot about an affair with a substitute teacher but did it happen or not? And did Hixon O.D. on stress meds and alcohol? "

timecapsule wrote on Aug 11, 2008 10:12 AM:

" Why is everyone so concerned about Hixson. It is all just hearsay and rumor anyway.
No one has any proof of anything he has done wrong. That is why he still gets to be principle. If he did anything wrong an investigation would be started. His personal issues with his wife should stay personal. If you don't agree, ask for an inquiry to be done. "

" Well well well, West Frank Fort has a new role model for its children. A man who has sex at school, and lies his way out of it, a man who cheats on his wife constantly, but is smart enough to usually go to a motel in Cape or elsewhere to do it, a man who gets beat up so bad by another professional in the community for not leaving his wife alone he can't come to school for days but comes back anyway, a man who gets rejected from a tour of duty in Iraq when they are taking anybody (section 8?)but comes back to his old job anyway, well well well, maybe he shoot for a higher position, his abilities seem outstanding for West Frankfort, and really give our children something to strive for!!!! "

" I hope that the community does what it should on this. Forgiveness is one thing, but when you hear street talk of incidents of the man and a sub teacher, peeping in showers/locker rooms, lockup for personal safety, drug abuse, relationships with former students, and innappropriate comments --and so much more. It is hard to have respect for anyone after that.
If he is denying it all-- then have a meeting with all concerned parents/students and face them. If he is not, then he should resign. hat happened to the military honor code?
I am disgusted, and saddened that our town has re-instated this man. "

" I agree. Report the facts with an uninvolved reporter. My understanding from several students is that the two assistant principals who have worked for Mr. Hixson actually did the job that Mr. Hixson was paid to do since he couldn't/wouldn't get the job done correctly. If I could vote, I would say to keep the original 400 days of leave in place and let him get his act together (or find another job) and stick with Mrs. Rush as Interim Principal. She has the respect of students, staff, teachers and parents, unlike Mr. Hixson. "

parent wrote on Jul 28, 2008 2:13 PM:

" I would think that the So Illinoisan would be more aware of their reporters.
She has been seen out socially with this so-called great guy so why would she not try to make this look good. Someone needs to report the facts, talk to the kids that were there last year, the teachers are afraid to comment openly now that he will be in charge again. "

" from my understanding there have been "allegations" of adultery (at school), drug addiction, as well as peeping Tom. That is who FCHS has retained as their High School principal to watch over OUR kids. Thank you West Frankfort school system. "

" Why don't you mind your own business, Leo? I have no intention of moving, or keeping quiet about this. You're darn right there's gonna be tension. Why shouldn't there be? Just because Hixson works for the school he shouldn't be open to criticism? Sorry, I don't play that. Questions WILL be asked until answered. Deal with that. "

Leo wrote on Jul 24, 2008 10:47 PM:

" First of all, ssguritarist, learn how to spell his name, and as for the rest of you.... move if you can't get past this, there will be enough tension without you all adding to the problem.. "

Barack_Osama wrote on Jul 24, 2008 6:24 PM:

" Yes, SSguitarist, you and all who have concerns have support in West Frankfort. It's time we all rise up and show the schools who the bosses really are. I'm tired of all the secrets. They have no right to keep anything from the public, especially the students and parents. Let's demand amswers. "

SSguitarist wrote on Jul 24, 2008 3:23 PM:

" Also the fact you say he is a good man makes me wonder how long you have lived here. Yes there is gossip in this town but this isn't gossip. This a warning for everyone in this town. I of all should know of him because I see him praticaly 10 months out of the 12. People may say we the student body don't have proof, well I say thats rubbish. I know many people see him do the acts that he did, teen and adults saw him. I do not want him back in school. I worked for a teacher for a semester and I had to go to the office to make copies. I had to bring him something and the teacher I helped out didn't know he was gone on his "Leave of absence." more like a madman's vacation if you ask me. I just want to add that I thank all who has commented negativly towards John Hixen. It makes me feel good, as a student, to know there are parents and citizens of this town who care for the well far of my fellow students and I. "

" I have lived in WF..not just "very long" but all my life, born and raised. I'm sure I have been talked about too, however I made a reputation for myself that makes its a compliment for people to talk about me. He could have done the same. I'm not giving him a break! "

Barack_Osama wrote on Jul 24, 2008 2:37 PM:

" Well, Leo. You appear to be outnumbered. What makes you say he is a "good man and principal"?

Folks, NOW is the time to band together and put a stop to this. Don't let them scare you into believing you don't have a choice. They work for us. "

Leo wrote on Jul 24, 2008 12:29 PM:

" If any of you have lived in WF very long, you have been talked about at one time or another too. Give him a break and let him do the job he is capible of doing. He is a good man and principal. "

" I am a child at FCHS and I know what Mr. Hixen has done, and I know who has seen it. All of my friends are upset by the fact that this man is allowed neer us. I for one will not give this man any respect and neither will my friends. "

amazed wrote on Jul 24, 2008 11:16 AM:

" As a parent of an FCHS student, I am also nervous (and angry) about this situation and will be watching all high school happenings and events even closer than before. After some of the events that happened last year, Mr. Hixson should have been fired, not protected. He is not a good role model for teenagers, but apparently ethics, morals and values aren't part of the job description. He has lost the respect of parents, students, teachers and staff. My FCHS student is dreading going back to school since Mr. Hixson has been reinstated. Pray for FCHS - it is going to be a tense school year. "

webb wrote on Jul 24, 2008 8:59 AM:

" I know the things anonWFparent is not saying. I am extremely nervous about this situation. From what I had seen in the past Mr. Hixson was a good person, but hearing about the recent events leading up to his second leave of absense, I would definitely question his authority over hundreds of lives. "

anonWFparent wrote on Jul 24, 2008 4:01 AM:

" This is totally JUST WRONG!!!! If most of you knew what he done in that school and the things he done away from that school, you would be outraged at this decision to reinstate this man. Most of us would have done time for the things he did. I would love to see the reason for his deployment to Iraq being canceled. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the reasons he wasn't even allow within 1000 feet of the school during graduation where the students were told if they saw him to report it immediately. What the heck is wrong here? HMM "

Barack_Osama wrote on Jul 24, 2008 1:46 AM:

" Closed session? Not a lot I can say?

Excuse me, but those are OUR kids up there as well as OUR tax money that pays his salary. If everything is to be so secretive, maybe our kids don't need to be there. How would you like to lose a lot of tax money due to losing a lot of students. We can certainly arrange that. "
