Summer art to be fun, so send the kids to classes

CARBONDALE - Instead of sending the kids to go outside or watch TV this summer, you can send them farther - to the museum. The University Museum at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is offering free art workshops from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays in July.

The July 9 workshop is a kites building project that allows creation to take off; July 16 is a DIY toys session where your little Milton-Bradleys get to tinker; July 23 is a course in cartoon collages to storyboard their thinly veiled love for the girl next door; and the final session July 30 is a pop-up art instruction to make their two-dimensional imaginations find full forms.

The workshops all converge into an exhibit featuring the combination of arts education with arts and crafts. Recommended ages for children are 7 to 14. Pre-registration is a requirement up to two days before the program. Register by calling the museum at 453-5388.
