4th of July Celebrations and schedules for 2008

Anna: Dusk Friday, Anna City Park.

Carbondale: Dusk Friday, SIUC arena. Rain will move the fireworks to the next day. Rain dates include Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

Carterville: Dusk Friday, Cannon Park.

Christopher: Dusk Friday, city ballpark.


Du Quoin: Dusk Saturday, Du Quoin State Fairground.

Goreville: Dusk Friday, city park. Rain date is Saturday.

Harrisburg: Dusk, Friday, Saline County Fairgrounds.

Lake Of Egypt: Dusk, Saturday, Elks Park.

Marion: Dusk Friday, Knights of Columbus Hall; after Southern Illinois Miners' ballgames Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Rent One Park.

Metropolis: Dusk Thursday, Dorothy Miller Park, on the riverfront.

Mount Vernon: Dusk Friday, Mount Vernon. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Murphysboro: 9:15 p.m. Friday, Riverside Park. Music begins at 7 p.m. in the band shell with Four on the Floor.

Sparta: 9:30 p.m. Thursday Sparta Country Club.

Vienna: Dusk Friday, ball park. Event includes a disc jockey, popcorn and soda.

West Frankfort: Dusk Saturday, Frankfort Community Park. Southern Illinois Concert Band will play from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the park.

Fourth of July celebrations

Johnston City: 2008 Freedom Celebration will be Friday, City Park East (Johnston City Ballpark). Schedule includes: Baby contest, 2-4 p.m., ages 6-48 months, $10 entry fee; photo contest, 2-8 p.m., entry fee $10 for pictures 8x10 or smaller, voting all day; inflatable games for children, 2-9 p.m., arm bands available; car, truck and motorcycle show, 2-5 p.m., $15 entry fee; firefighters' spray and play, 3-4 p.m., free water play for children; performances by middle and high school cheerleaders and poms, 5-9 p.m., followed by Little Miss and Mr. Pageant and Miss Freedom Celebration Scholarship Pageant; fireworks, 9:15 p.m.

Kaskaskia Island: 12:30 p.m. Friday, Fort Kaskaskia Historic Site, near Chester. Location was changed because of flooding on Kaskaskia Island. Since Liberty Bell of the West cannot be rung, the 1874 church bells near the fort will be rung. Brigadier Gen. William L. Enyart, adjutant general, Illinois Department of Military Affairs, will be main speaker. Barb Brown, Randolph County Circuit Clerk, will be mistress of ceremonies. Music will be provided by Chester Municipal Band, Jessica McAdams and Brian Roth. Other speakers include Don Welge, president, Gilster Mary-Lee Corporation; veteran Danny James; Emily Lyons, Liberty Bell of the West Chapter of NSDAR, representing island residents; Kenneth Ragland, commander, Chester VFW; Roland Wagner, commander, Chester American Legion; Chester Mayor Marty Bert; Perryville Mayor Deborah Gahan; Darrell Duensing, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency; the Rev. Dave Corrigan and the Rev. Jeffrey Moore.

Rend Lake: 9:30 p.m. Saturday, dam and visitor center. Music by S.I. Concert Band simulcast on FM 106.3. Food will be available from 4-10 p.m. Children's area will be open from 5 p.m. to dusk. Entertainment includes: Elvis Presley Tribute Band, 5-7 p.m.; S.I. Concert Band, 8-9 p.m.; Pepsi Wheel of Fortune, 9 p.m. Bring lawn chairs. Cost is $5 per car. 438-2121.

Steeleville: Celebration runs through Friday at Steeleville American Legion Park. Daily schedule includes: Classic baseball games at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m.; carnival rides, 6 p.m. -midnight; entertainment, 8 p.m.- midnight; arts and crafts in the city park. On Friday, parade begins at 10 a.m. Motorcycle show registration is from 9 a.m.-noon, with awards at 2 p.m. Classic baseball games are at noon, 2:30 and 5 p.m. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Friday.
