Door could be closing on Treviño
BY CALEB HALE AND SCOTT FITZGERALD
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 10:42 AM CDT
CARBONDALE - Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard is expected to decide before the end of the month whether he will fire Chancellor Fernando Treviño, who was placed on administrative leave last week.

The president announced Monday that Treviño had been put on administrative leave with pay because a list of serious concerns had been brought to Poshard's attention by campus and community officials relating to the performance of Treviño's assigned duties.

Poshard said a deep sense of obligation to the students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Southern Illinois University prompted him to take action concerning the chancellor's position.

Carbondale lawyer Shari Rhode confirmed Monday she has been retained by Treviño as his legal counsel regarding the labor matter.

The list of concerns that Poshard spoke about will be presented to her and her client. They will review each item and submit a response, Rhode said. Rhode spent about 20 years as chief trial attorney for SIU before retiring and opening a private practice specializing in employment law and litigation.

Treviño did not a return a phone message from The Southern Illinoisan on Monday.

A former professor and dean of the School of Public Health at University of North Texas Health Science Center before being hired as SIUC's chancellor eight months ago, Trevino was technically put on leave a week ago, but Poshard didn't confirm the move until releasing his statement Monday morning.

The statement also said Don Rice, interim provost and vice chancellor, would handle the day-to-day duties of the chancellor's office until further notice.

Rice wouldn't comment directly to the media but issued a statement that revealed Trevino's leave could last for several weeks.

"In the chancellor's absence, and at the president's directive, the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor and the Office of the Chancellor will work together to ensure that the business of the university continues uninterrupted and the obligations of the Chancellor's Office are met," Rice's statement said.

Business should continue as usual, Carbondale campus spokesman Rod Sievers said, adding Rice is capable of covering both chancellor and provost roles while Trevino is under review.

"We don't know how this process is going to end. Dr. Trevino may well be chancellor in the end; he may not," Sievers said. "Life goes on, and we have to take it one day at a time."

Poshard spoke with the campus constituency heads and vice chancellors Monday, giving them as much information as possible, SIU spokesman David Gross said. Since Trevino's performance review is a personnel matter, officials haven't discussed details out of respect for his privacy, he added.

Campus leaders that spoke with The Southern Monday knew more than they could say because of this reason.

"I can't say I saw it coming; I didn't see it coming, but as far as doing the job and how (Trevino) did, I can't comment," said SIUC Undergraduate Student Government President Demetrous White.

A single person won't make or break the university's progress, White said, but added it is unfortunate something like this would happen so soon after Trevino was hired.

Peggy Stockdale, who sat on the search committee that helped select Trevino and currently serves as president of the SIUC Faculty Senate, said the chancellor's showing during interviews was strong, but there have been concerns about the way he has addressed some of his duties in recent months.

"I think there was a sense there were concerns, but it's never been specifically talked about in any deliberate way," Stockdale said.

The Faculty Senate is scheduled to meet today, and Stockdale expects members will have a number of questions about the future of the campus' leadership.

" The door should be closing on Poshard! Plagiarism is a serious violation which should have led the Board to fire Poshard as president of SIU. Who is Poshard to have "concerns" on a person's job performance when Poshard committed a much wrongful act of PLAGIARISM? Poshard, what about YOUR job performance and the plagiarism behind it, and the continuous embarrassment you create? After reading all of the comments from the Chancellor's administrative leave, evidently the majority of the comments made about Poshard have all been overwhelmingly negative. Again, the door should be closing on you Poshard!

" Glenn fails again in his roll as president. Glad he didn't become governor.
Good thing Blago,Tedrick and Simmons like him, othrwise he would have to be competent at his job. Guess Trevino didn't want everything to be a political joke like it has become.
Bring back Wendler and give him Poshard's job. Then clean out the board of trustees. "

" The issue involving Dr. Trevino is likely attributable to the politically correct belief that it is OK to match the task to the person rather than the person to the task. "

" To Aeson: you missed the weather problems: Glenn micromanaged, closed the school for two days when the weather was not too bad, left it open for two days when it was very dangerous (and SIUC no longer has the snow removal equipment that it used to have). Now buildings are closed by a power outage. There is NO money for infrastructure, but Glenn goes fundraising for a new (smaller) stadium.

They put the wrong person on administrative leave. "

" That ribald headline juxtaposed with the photo of Trevino's actual closed door ranks with the best conceptual art pieces of the 1970's, which have so changed the modern world. It's on par with NBC News in 1964 showing film of workmen building a real wooden platform while discussing in voiceover a political party platform. In short, this is a veritable knee-slapper. "

" Consider Poshard's record.

1. Hired because he would attract more government money (total failure), attract donations for Saluki Way (Succeeded only with Carbondale City Council, involving a Council action that went against public wishes), and improve enrollments (still significantly below 2005-06 level).

2. Copied former president's "welcome" statement, without acknowledgement.

3. Fired Wendler, for what now appear to be political and personal reasons.

4. Found guilty of plagiarism, even though the committee was partisan and he appeared in front of it.

5. Hired Trevino, who appears to be hopeless.

Tell me, is Trevino the problem, or could it be someone else? "

SC1968 wrote on Mar 18, 2008 11:12 AM:

" I guess Poshard discovered something about Trevino that isn't "politically correct", huh? Exactly what is it going to take to make SIU realize that it's biggest problem right now is Glenn Poshard?! That man will always be a politician, out to serve his own interests and his alone. Look what he did to Walter Wendler, and over a personal disagreement on a social issue! My guess is that this is what is happening now. Poshard has turned that university into his own personal dictatorship, and anyone who dares to disagree with him on anything is booted to the curb. SIU, do yourself a huge favor and dump Glenn Poshard before he finishes you off. "

A Soap Opera wrote on Mar 18, 2008 8:46 AM:

" Let's see. Hmmmm. Ms. Argosinger, Mr. Wendler, Mr. Trevino, Glenn and his dissertation. Is SIU just aiming at its own foot continuously? When will it end? "

1 person for both jobs wrote on Mar 18, 2008 8:35 AM:

" So if Rice can do the both jobs, why do you need so many highly paid positions at SIU? Just combine some jobs like Poshard did before and be done with it. I think Glen likes the turmoil. "

Former Southern Illinoisan wrote on Mar 18, 2008 8:23 AM:

" I think it's time for the board of trustees and the president's office to issue a public apology to Dr. Argersinger and Dr. Wendler. This is ridiculous. "
