INA - Larry West will succeed Bob Carlock as Rend Lake College's vice president of finance and administration, RLC trustees decided Tuesday night.
Carlock will retire Dec. 31 after 17 years in the position.
West, a 1974 Pinckneyville High School grad, will start Jan. 14. He was signed to a 2.5-year contract with an annual salary of $95,000.
He will come to the college from the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie campus, where he has been employed since 1994.
"I started there as an assistant professor and moved into administration," West said. "As I said in my interview with Rend Lake, I received my training in South Carolina and now I will apply that training here."
West, 51, was a coal miner for 15 years. He was working toward his undergraduate degree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale when the De Soto mine where he worked shut down.
He received his bachelor's degree in 1989, then his master of science degree before moving to South Carolina.
He is currently dean of budget and finance as well as USCS athletic director.
Taking the job with RLC offered him the opportunity to be closer to family and work for an institution he has long admired, he said.
"Rend Lake is a wonderful college with increasing enrollment and a top-line senior administration. I see nothing but good for Rend Lake in the future," he said.
