COMMENT ON SIU AT MONTANA
By The Southern
Monday, November 27, 2006 4:43 PM CST
Who's going to win Saturday's NCAA Division I-AA playoff game between Southern Illinois and Montana?

Post your comments below and predict a final score at the end. Also, read more comments at www.thesouthern.com/dawgblog.

The Salukis enter the game after a last-minute 36-30 win over Tennessee-Martin. Nick Hill threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Alan Turner with 57 seconds left for SIU.

Whitlock ran for 207 yards and four touchdowns for the Salukis (9-3), who overcame a 20-point deficit.

The Grizzlies routed McNeese State 31-6 to advance. Josh Swogger passed for 259 yards and four touchdowns to lead second-ranked Montana (11-1) to its 11th straight victory.

Swogger threw TD passes of 50 yards to Dan Beaudin, 14 yards to Eric Allen and added third-quarter scoring passes of 8 and 11 yards to Craig Chambers.

Will Montana be too much for SIU to handle?

He needs more targets/better receivers and a better passing oriented game plan. We need speed in the defensive secondary too. Congrats to the Griz's. "

" Just a quick response to Fan... What you don't seem to realize is that generally Montana fans outnumber fans of their opponents no matter where the game is being played... While nothing is like playing in Washington-Grizzly Stadium, you will still see the Griz faithful out in full force...even thousands of miles away!!! "

" With all the other semi-final teams from east of the Mississippi River and much closer to Chattanogga, TN for fan support, we'll just see how well the grizzlies can play without the assistance of the crowd noise, that is if they even make it past the University of Massachusetts. "

Dawg Gone U wrote on Dec 4, 2006 9:51 AM:

" Congratulations to the Grizzlies ... you guys manhandled our offense on Saturday. You should be proud. Nick Hill looked lost, and Arkee was totally shut down ... not an easy task. Again, congrats on the win and best of luck this week. I hope you guys take the championship this year ... you've got my respect and my backing, for what that's worth. I love my Dawgs, but I'll admit it when we take a whipping. "

" Montana has a nice club and well coached obviously. SIU needs a more experienced QB and preferably a Division I transfer. It appears the teams doing well in the post season have D I QBs at the helm. Anyway, got to see App State play last night and this is by far the best D I-AA team in the country. I predict Montana and App State locking horns with the final score being: App State: 28 Montana: 10 "

" Congratulations to the Salukies for a hard fought game on Saturday. Your team played much better than indicated by the final score. The SIU front four were impressive and put relentless pressure on Swogger. The sacked him at least five times. Arkie was a one-man show and is one of the best backs we have seen in Grizzly Stadium this year. Kudos also to the SIU fans who made a long trip, sat through a cold afternoon and did an admirable job trying to out yell 18,000+ rabid Griz fans. You were gracious and went out of your way to offer warm regards and congratulations at the end of the game. I hope we see you and your team again next year (preferably at Grizzly Stadium). "

There's rumor his number will be retired right before the game in WAGRIZ stadium so no player from SIU will ever be able to play in our stadium with that number. Your coach keeps talking about how slow our defense is. I guess they won't even be able to tackle Arkee and he will have 400 yards by halftime. There are three definitions; 1)It's the oldest pure-bred dog in existence. 2)It's the mascot of Southern Illinois University, and 3) is the name of the team that you WILL remember when you play them, win or lose. I LOVE my hairy little Griz. 5)My wall is a shrine to the Griz. I tally all the stats by hand, in case someone screws up. I call it voulenteer work, for some reason the coaches call it stalking. " Saluki Fans – You’ll have to forgive my fellow Griz fans for being so darn proud of our Grizzlies. You’ll also have to forgive the Griz-envy in some of the Bobcat fans’ comments (Side Note - To any Cat fan that is about to reply back with some sort of “3 out of the last 5” nonsense, here are some UM stats: 18 out of the last 21 vs. MSU, 66-35-5 all-time vs. MSU, a share of the last 9 BSC championships, and 14 consecutive playoff appearances with 5 championship appearances and 2 national championships – enough said). Being a Montanan and UM alumni, it’s hard not to get excited and be proud of the UM football program (or to be a jealous and envious MSU fan). Simply put, everything at UM is done first-class. There is not a better venue or a more supportive fan base in I-AA football (some will argue in I-A also). The fans, the facilities, and all of the fine players and coaches that have run on to the field in Washington-Grizzly stadium over the last 20 years have resulted in one of the most impressive and consistently successful football programs in the history of college football. Even our mascot Monte wins national championships (twice named the Capital One mascot of the year) and sends alumni to the pros (Chicago’s Benny the Bull is a Montana alumni and former Monte). So you can see we’ve got a lot to be proud of at Montana (and that’s just our football program). All that aside no Griz fan can put into words what game day is like in Washington-Grizzly Stadium. A picture helps (http://www.egriz.com/GrizPics2/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=26&pos=6) and so does a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rxmtnufMQA), but there is no substitute for actually being in WaGriz when the Grizzlies take the field. Ok, ok, ok, this is getting long and my lunch hour is running short, so I want go on record as saying that I think UM matches up well against the Salukis on both sides of the ball, especially on defense. I know diehard Saluki fans think this is crazy talk, but I predict Murph and the boys will hold Whitlock to fewer than 100 yards. Yes I know, “we haven’t seen anyone like Arkee Whitlock”. The opposite is also true in that Arkee Whitlock has not seen a defense like Montana’s. Again it’s hard to explain how strong our defense is so here is some video from one of the hardest hitting the Griz-Cat games on record (http://streamingmedia.montanagrizzlies.com/umgriz/2006_2007/Football/Multimedia/vs_Montana_S/um-msu-2006.wmv). By the way our offense wasn’t hitting on all cylinders that day, but as you can see our defense was amazing (actually MSU’s defense was good too). My predictions are that the Saluki game will be closer than the McNeese game, but the outcome will be the same with Griz winning 27-13. Good luck Salukis! Good luck Bobcats. GO GRIZ!!! "

We are playing much better of late. I think a shutout is more of an emotional than educated prediction. 2 of our 3 losses were to other playoff teams in the Gateway, IL St. and Youngstown; and the 3rd to W. KY who is going D1 next yr. It seems that horrific road conditions last Saturday, this week’s subzero temperatures, and Tuesday’s announcement that the Grizzly/Saluki game will be televised across the state have conspired to keep the attendance for this game down to 18,000. Attendance that low is unheard of here, this season we averaged 23,465 and drew over 20,000 for the first round game over Thanksgiving weekend. "

That will be a very interesting contrast. If Arkee can stay outside, he can outrun them. On the other hand, SIU continues year after year to not be able to defend well against the pass, and their QB trhows a lot. Now, if we can just get OUR offensice coordinator to get the pplays called in before the 25 sec clock expires, we might just have a good chance. I wish we had that type of atmosphere when I was in Carbondale! Everyone is saying how it will be SIUs defense that makes or breaks this game. I think that's true, but specifically, I think it will come down to how well the Saluki defense can control UMs passing game. Give Swogger the opportunity to put some air under the ball and he will do some damage. His biggest fault I think is his difficulty outside the pocket. Should be a great game, though! But Arkee-like numbers these are not ... last I checked Mr. Whitlock has compiled 1,700 rushing yards and 25 TD's ... Oh, wait, ... yep ... that's TWICE the TD's Lex had last year. Come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure if those stats include the numbers from the Tennessee-Martin game or not. I think those are just Arkee's regular season totals. Don't get me wrong, I know you guys have had some talented backs - Hilliard and the Brooks kid, but they are NOT Arkee. "

Our incomparable D loves a challenge and Arkee is certainly that. As your coach noted in a recent article everyone has been calling him from around the country to tell him how hard it is to play in WaGriz Stadium. The combination of the stadium environment, the natural elements, the VERY physical style of the Griz D, travel, our very special 'special' teams play, our offensive potential overwhelm teams who venture into Griz country, especially those who have never been here before. " If SIU can play well through all 4 quarters they have a great chance to win. The dirty hippies (grizzlies) have not played a complete game for quite a while. They ended the regular season with an ugly performance against Montana State. Both teams played terrible and neither one deserved to win that game. Then they only showed up for one half of their first playoff game. However, there is something to be said for finding a way to win even when you're not playing your best. Montana has established a tradition of winning over the past two decades. This has carried them through a lot of close games that they maybe shouldn't have won. Also, the majority of these wins come in the Big Sky Conference, which is one of the toughest conferences in 1-AA football. I don't know much about SIU, but from what I've heard they have a very strong running game. Teams with that style of play have given Montana trouble in the past, a la James Madison last year. Good luck salukies. Play tough and beat those hippies!!!!!! "

I believe there might be more folks from Montana on the Southern's website right now than locals ... what gives? This is the virtual equivalent of a game at McAndrew ... mediocre fan support, at best. Not me! I believe the Griz will be a serious challenge on Saturday ... the weather will be a factor and the crowd will test or nerves big-time ... BUT, the mostly cordial (thanks, by the way) Montana fans on this blog don't seem to realize that they're not the only ones with SUBSTANTIAL weapons. You guys haven't seen a player like Arkee. You won't and can't be ready for him, I'm telling you. He's special and he'll make you look silly at times. Even if your storied 'ton of fun' line does their best, Arkee will find holes. There's nothing you can do about that ... there's nothing anyone has been able to do about that. Add to the mix that Nick Hill is finding his confidence and his arm and we're talking about an offense that the Griz won't be able to contain enough to win. They may hold Arkee, Randle, and Turner to FEWER rushing yards than they're accustomed to, but it won't be enough. You'll have to basically shut us out to win, I believe. If we get just a few pass possessions for decent yardage, on top of our rushing yards (which we WILL get) it'll just be too much Saluki offense. If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to congratulate the Griz on a well-earned victory, but I just don't see it happening. Don't worry ... 118-13 at home is still a great record. "

" Griz defense has been very successful stopping highly touted runners. SUI will have to use their pass more in this game than they have in the past. Remember, bad weather favors the receiver, not the runner, contrary to conventional wisdom. Defensively, SUI will have to put pressure on Swogger with all-out blitzes and hope Montana counters with their old way (see games against MSU, UC Davis, et. al) of pulling back receivers to block and sending two wide-outs deep. This strategy has kept too many opponents in the game. On the other hand, if Montana uses their screens, tight ends, and slot backs like they did against McNeese, sorry Dawgs. In short, the game will come down to coaching, both in preparation and play calling. Forget the "Den" the "Weather" and the "Standings." While UM's offensive coaching has been called into question in the past, a bonehead meltdown is too much for SUI to hope for in this critical game. Griz by 10. Welcome to Montana and good luck. As for the game, our D is too good at home. If y'all hope to win, you better have a D that can hold us to under three TDs. It would be shocking if SIU scores more than 21. (even though y'all have a great O, and I can't wait to see Whitlock in person) "

" Montana is excited to have SIU and the fans visit the "Very" friendly confines of Washington-Grizzly Stadium. We love football, and have a great time...so we hope you will too. SIU has a powerful running game lead by your Walter-Payton Award finalist Whitlock...it should be a great matchup...a dynamic runner vs. a steller Montana defense. However, what about the Salukis defense against a Montana offense that is hitting its stride...and a Montana special teams that makes the big plays when they need too...and the home field advantage that Montana absolutely thrives for....It should be a great battle, and we in Montana will be there in full force....all 24,000 of us. Montana is the "Last Best Place"! "

" Montana's Ton of Fun...Line up center Jeff Marshall (6'5"/285 lbs). Sandwich him between gaurds Colin Dow (6'5"/318 lbs) and terran Hillesland (6'7"/320 lbs). Squeeze them alongside tackles Cody Balogh (6'7"/320 lbs) and Brent Russum (6'4"/285 lbs), then garnish with tight ends Dan Beaudin (6'5"/236 lbs) and Steven Pfahler (6'5"/232 lbs) = 1996 pounds of muscled and marbled beef. That coupled with a home record of 132-18; 21-4 in the IAA playoffs, at Washington Grizzly Stadium and you have a long afternoon for the Dawgs. Prediction: UM 31 SIU 13 "

" I think its going to be a very tough game for the Dawgs on Saturday. I checked a kewl site (egriz.com) to scout the Griz. Their stadium holds about 24,000 and they lead IAA in attendance with over 23,000 fans per game. In the twenty year history of Washington Grizzly Stadium they have a home record of 132-18; including a record of 21-4 in playoff games. Montana's stadium was the only 1AA venue to be listed in the 2005 Sports Illustrated's Top Twenty College Football Venues. The Griz have been in the IAA playoffs for the last 14 consecutive seasons; 17 appearances overall. They've made five trips to the National Championship game since 1995. They've had twenty consecutive winning seasons and have won or shared the last nine Big Sky Conference Championships. The Sporting News profiled the University of Montana football program in an October 2006 story as being the last IAA Football Dynasty. So, hopefully the Dawgs can be a Giant Killer come Saturday. Remember, every Dawg has its day...GO DAWGS!! "

" I'd say the most telling quote in all the coverage of first-round victory is the one from the SIU athletic director talking about how great the turnout -- 5,694 -- was for the first round game. Grizzly Stadium holds about four times that many fans and they are both savvy and LOUD. I think it'll be a great game and I can't wait to see Whitlock, but I suggest the coaching staff crank up the volume at practice. Griz 42, Salukis 17. "

" SIU players will be saying the cold won't affect them - but it will. They will say the crowd won't bother them - but it will. Montana will shut down the SIU running game and THAT will be just to much to overcome. Montana 27, SIU 10. "

" As a Griz fan, I certainly hope the Griz come out on top. They have a very talented defense, but I'll admit to being more than a little worried about Mr. Whitlock. Good luck, and if you are making the trip to Missoula, have a fantastic time. Griz 29 SIU 17 "

" I live in Grizville here in Missoula, Montana. The game should be close, but if the Griz can shut down the running attack of Southern Ill. then the griz will win. But if they don't then the game will be close until the end. Montana Has never lost a Quarter final game in Missoula. Score will be Montana-34 southern Ill.-10 Should be a great game. "

" Salukis D is young, and still learning. Offense will score against Montana. Home field advantage will be huge for the home team. This Montana team got waxed by Iowa early in the season, and Iowa was not very good this year. We beat a Indiana team that was same level as Iowa, I predict a score of 33 - 31 DAWGS! "

" The Griz have too much going for hem right now. Great defense, balanced offense, and the greatest 1-AA homefield advantage. I think it will be a one score game with the Griz on top. I hope all the SIU fans enjoy the visit to Montana, dress warm. "

" Make no mistake, the Grizzlies will give us all we want on Saturday. This will be a battle. Every team is beatable, however, no matter how inhospitable the environment or loud the crowd. We've been the underDAWGs before and come out on top ...the same can happen this weekend. I can't wait ... my prediction? SIU-35 Montana-28 "

I think Montana will be too much to handle, but your team will keep it close. Good luck. Welcome to Montana "

" Montana Grizzlies will be to much for SIU. Washington Grizzly Stadium is a "den" that most opposing teams don't make out of without a loss (118-12). Hope the SIU fans enjoy the atmosphere though, best in 1AA football. GOOD LUCK. "
